Bethesda Mission faces thousands in damages after pipe bursts

HARRISBURG -- A Harrisburg shelter, the only place for warmth for many people, is in midst of a crisis after a water pipe burst early morning Wednesday leaving behind thousands of dollars in damage.

Shortly after 2 a.m., somebody at the Bethesda Mission heard a rushing sound which turned out to be water coursing through the organization’s technology room. All but two computers and machines were damaged, according to Bill Christian, the director of social services at Bethesda Mission.

“It’s very burdensome right now because, number one, water is off on the second and third floor,” said Christian. “The house is packed because of the cold weather we have, we’re out of beds and people are sleeping on their mats and stuff like that and we have limited ability to accommodate them.”

The damaged computers made it difficult for daily operations, according to Christian. Officials had to write down names of visitors on a piece of paper, then will have to enter it into the system at a later time.

Christian expects the computers to be running shortly, while plumbers will try to locate the source of the break.

Damages could reach up to $10,000.
