CARLISLE -- A 65-year-old Carlisle man continues to recover after being attacked by two teenagers while in an argument over a parking space.

Charles Petty Jr. has lived along West North Street in the borough for more than 30 years. He said he lived in a peaceful neighborhood, but lately there’s been some trouble.

“He knocked me down, hit my head on the pavement, and I guess I blacked out and they started kicking me in the face,” he said.

Petty was rushed to the hospital, where he discovered he had suffered a gash to his forehead, cuts to his lips, and was missing some dentures. One of the teens also used a stick to beat him.

According to Petty and police, the two 17-year-old boys approached the man after they told the grandmother of his great-grandchildren she was not allowed to park in a space right in front of his home.

“They told her she has to move, and get out of their block, and that this is their block,” he said, saying the two implied they owned the block. Respect, said Petty, is something that too many youth don’t have for their elders.

“These gentlemen are getting too bold and more courageous by people backing away from them and I was not going to let that happen,” Petty said.

In recent months, the borough installed surveillance cameras at a corner near his home after a security issue. While investigating, police said the video came in handy because it was positioned exactly where the assault occurred. Police said the cameras have been used to crack crimes throughout the borough and helped identify the two teenagers involved, leading to their arrest.

Petty said he feels people need to start sticking up for the neighborhoods and communities.

“My feeling is, if I back down and keep backing down, they are going to take over my neighborhood,” he said.

The video as well as well as the identities of the teenagers will not be released because of their ages. Police said they face charges including simple assault.
