CARLISLE -- A family is shaken up after a man showed up at their home asking to do a survey, but then pulled a gun on the homeowner.

Carlisle Borough Police responded to a home along the 1200 block of Georgetown Circle after 9:30 Sunday night.

According to police, the unidentified man showed up to the home asking to do a survey and questionnaire with the homeowner. When the homeowner declined, the man police are still looking for pulled out a black gun, prompting the homeowner to slam the door on him and call 911.

Within two minutes, police responded to the home and had no luck finding the man in question.

A woman who lives in the home said her husband opened the door last night. She said she, too, remains shaken up. Police said they only had one report of the incident, but have heard similar stories throughout the region.

"If you're not expecting somebody to come at your door at 9 or 10 at night, if you're feeling suspicious, we'll come and check them out as opposed to you opening the door and getting into a confrontation with these folks," said Lt. Stephen Latshaw.

The man in question has a stocky build and stands around 5 feet, 7 inches. Police released a composite sketch on Monday afternoon.

A police K-9 sniffed the scene earlier Monday upon the discovery of a BB gun clip near the home. After an extensive search through the area, the police dog did not have luck in finding further evidence nearby.

"I certainly will now be making sure things are locked up," said Simon Heatherington, who recently moved to the street. He said the community is quiet and has strong communication among neighbors.

"That sense of community is a lot of what keeps crime down," he said.
While police continue to investigate, they remind people to be on the look out and warn them to be suspicious of those who show up to their door unannounced.

Since the person of interest was asking for a survey, Latshaw said anybody who solicits in the borough must be granted a permit and present identification.
