Cat shot with arrow, survives

HANOVER -- For the second time this year, animal cruelty officers are investigating an incident of a cat that had been shot with an arrow in Union Township, Adams County. Luckily, both cats survived.

The most recent incident happened on Tuesday night when Vicki White and her husband found their cat, S’mores, with an arrow shot through it outside their home. The cat spends most of her time outside, but S’mores was trying to get through the fence back into their yard at the time.

The White family removed the arrow from their cat, which was obviously in pain, and took S’mores to the Clearview Animal Hospital the next morning.

Veterinarians at the Animal Hospital couldn’t believe that the cat survived the attack.

“She was very lucky,” White said. “I showed them the arrow, and they were shocked she was still alive.” The vet says if the arrow hit had been an inch off in any direction, it could have hit a vital organ and killed the cat.

S’mores was released Wednesday afternoon with medication, and amazingly, the cat is only suffering from minor nerve damage in her left leg. The family is hoping police can find the person who shot S’mores, so these shootings can stop, and justice can be served.

“I just don’t believe it was an accident,” White said. “I think it was deliberately done.”

Police say the type of arrow used in this shooting is mainly used for target practice. The arrow includes a serial number, which police hope will help lead them to the shooter.

“I just think it’s disgusting that someone would even do this to a cat or any other animal. I just can’t believe it,” White said.

She added that cats have gone missing in this area before, and she fears that it could be because other cats were shot with arrows as well. “It just makes me wonder how many cats are out there that they’re shooting that aren’t making it home,” she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 334-8111.
