Children in Lebanon daycare exposed to lead dust

LEBANON -- Some parents in Lebanon got some frightening news last week -- their children's day care had tested positive for lead particles.

The news came from the YMCA that operated the Northwest Children's Center which is housed inside the Covenant United Methodist Church on North Ninth Street.

"We were totally shocked," YMCA CEO Phil Tipton told CBS 21.

The testing by Pinnacle Health was prompted by some even more upsetting news: A 2-year-old girl had lead poisoning. She was enrolled in the day care since she was 6 weeks old.

A lawsuit has now been filed on behalf of that little girl and her guardian.

The YMCA moved all the other children to a center inside its headquarters on North Seventh Street.

"We are in the business of taking care of children and it was upsetting to here this had happened to one of our own," Tipton said.

There is no safe level of lead poisoning. The condition usually is caused by old lead paint that disintegrates and becomes airborne dust.

Lead pain was banned in 1978 but it remains in many older homes in Pennsylvania.

Tipton says he does not know of any recent renovations in the day care center that would have stirred up old paint.Children in Lebanon daycare exposed to lead dust
