Company backs out of leasing parking garages, puts hold on Harrisburg Strong Plan

Reported by Ewa Roman:

Harrisburg -- A main part of the plan to get the City of Harrisburg out of financial trouble backed out Wednesday.

AEW Capital Management will no longer pay to lease the city's parking garages and some say that means the city is back in trouble.

Leasing these garages would have brought in millions, now they have to find another company that will lease them.  However, they think they can do it within the next few days.

Earlier this year, it appeared there was light at the end of the tunnel for the financially broken City of Harrisburg when the Harrisburg Strong Plan was drawn up.

The centerpiece was the leasing of the parking facilities.

But one of the companies involved, AEW, has pulled out and now some say the city is back in trouble.

But the parking authority vice chair says that is not the case at all.

"It's trouble, ok?” stated Vice Chair Corky Goldstein.  “But it doesn't mean the deal is off the table. Is it a big stumbling block? To the point that we have to bring someone else in to fill in that spot there, but the deal is on, everyone else is holding together,"

The man who was brought in by the state to help the city get back on its feet, Receiver William Lynch, says “today's news is more of an annoyance than a disaster."

Other options are being explored and "the news shouldn't be too much of a problem."

Sources say AEW said they're getting out because they're a private company and they don’t want to be in the public eye.  It is also believed they were looking for more money.
