Cuts to Harrisburg schools cause concern

The first day of school was filled with more changes and concerns for Harrisburg school district parents.

The district continues to make difficult decisions in an effort to reduce its debt.

That includes a teacher contract that has convinced 31 teachers to resign because of a pay cut and higher health care contributions.

For students, that will mean they will have a switch in teachers over the school year.

Superintendent Sybil Knight Burney says the district will have 60 days to find replacements for teachers moving to other school districts because of a protection provided in the state school code.

She assured parents that new qualified teachers will be found as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, parents taking their child to the first day of school at Ben Franklin School hoped it wouldn't be their child's teacher who will leave this year.

Other parents complained of not enough busing and not receiving the proper enrollment materials until they actually walked their child into school.Cuts to Harrisburg schools cause concern
