LOWER SWATARA TOWNSHIP -- Demolition of dozens of flood damaged homes in our area is underway with the assistance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's buyout program.

John Gaiski of Lower Swatara Township watched as his home was brought down today.

Five other homes in his neighborhood off of Bradford Road will be coming down over the next few days."Mixed emotions watching it come down," John said.

He lived in the home for over 40 years and faced flood after flood.

Tropical Storm Lee was the final straw.

"I am getting near retirement age, I don't need this anymore so I put it on the FEMA buyout list," he said. "We just got our final checks a couple weeks ago."

FEMA reports, statewide, 217 homes have been acquired because of several different emergency declarations.

Locally, four homes in Hummelstown, nine homes in Londonderry Townshiip, 14 homes in Lower Swatara Township and 21 homes in Middletown.

FEMA says the program is voluntary.

Some homeowners near the Gaiskis' home said that the finances didn't make sense for them while one wishes their home could have been included.Demolition of flood-damaged homes underway
