Family homeless after fire in Steelton; cause under investigation

STEELTON -- A family in Steelton is without a home tonight after flames tore through their home.

Several fire companies rushed to the 400 block of Swatara Street Tuesday night to put out the fire, which was knocked down soon after by firefighters.

While no injuries were reported, firefighters prepared for the deep freeze temperatures.

“The guys are well-trained to know that they have to keep the water lines open so we don’t have those frozen issues with lines,” said Chief Steve Brubacher of the Steelton Fire Department.

While fire trucks surrounded the homes, crews used nearby fire hydrants to knock out the blaze. Water turned into icicles dangling from the hose within a couple of hours.

“As long as we’re keeping the water flowing, it’s usually just an issue on the outside of the hydrant,” said Brubacher.

Brubacher said the gear firefighters wear keeps them warm throughout the brutal temperatures, but could pose problems should it come into contact with water.

“When you’re messing with water in these temperatures, they’re obviously going to get stiff,” he said.

An emergency triage was set up for the firefighters on call. Operated by an EMS team, an ambulance is kept warm for firefighters to escape the cold.

No injuries were reported in the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting a family of three. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
