MIDDLETOWN – A former McDonald’s franchisee will pay more than $200,000 in unpaid wages and damages to student workers here in the midstate.

Last March, students in the J-1 visa program reached out to CBS 21 News, claiming Cheung Enterprises of Middletown underpaid them and provided poor housing conditions.

The U.S. Department of Labor investigated and found the company and its president, Andrew Cheung, took advantage of the student workers by failing to pay overtime and in some cases, paying below the federal minimum wage.

The company also was charged with excessive rent.

Cheung no longer operates any McDonald’s franchises. Former McDonald's franchise owner to pay back $200K
