YORK -- A former music teacher is charged with sexually abusing a young child.

The alleged assault happend at a former Menchey's Music location. Police paperwork indicates that the girl was only six or seven years old at the time.

"Not just as chief of police, but as a parent, I"m always concerned. It goes to the need to make sure we're getting the right people in the right positions with children," Springettsbury Township Police Chief Thomas Hyers said.

Hyers added that Justin Kehr had never been on the department's radar until May, when a girl came forward and told police he had molested her.

In 2008 and 2009, Kehr taught drum lessons at Menchey Music. The location, on Eastern Boulevard, is now closed.

Police paperwork says Kehr touched the girl inappropriately several times. He is currently in prison in Colorado for unrelated charges. In 2010, he pleaded guilty in California to a felony charge of possessing child pornography.

Letters were sent out to former Menchey students, and Hyers adds that this is a good reminder to keep communication with children open.

"Make sure you talk to your kids," he said.

Kehr will be extradited from Colorado to face charges in York.

"We have to hold those that violate that trust extremely accountable, and I think this sanction should be very severe," Hyers added.
