HARRISBURG -- The Fraternal Order of Police, Capital City Lodge 12, has endorsed Harrisburg Democratic Mayoral Candidate Eric Papenfuse.

A press release from Papenfuse's campaign said the move was, "an unprecedented vote of confidence, contending he is the best candidate to lead Harrisburg's economic recovery."

"This is the first time I can remember that the FOP has endorsed a candidate for mayor," Jason Brinker, president of FOP Lodge 12, said in a press release. "This election is so important for the future of Harrisburg, we felt we had to take a stand."

Brinker said the FOP Capital City Lodge 12 represents an estimated 275 active and retired police officers working in the city of Harrisburg. He said the officers voted unanimously to support Papenfuse over Republican candidate Dan Miller.

"In his discussions with us, Eric provided straightforward, honest answers to our questions," Brinker said. "He understands he doesn't have all the answers, but he has the sense to reach out to the experts, listen and educate himself.

"We think he's the best candidate to move Harrisburg forward," Brinker said.
"We appreciate the confidence Harrisburg police have placed in our campaign and in our platform," Papenfuse said in a statement. "Crime and safety is at the top of our list of priorities. And it is clear we must strengthen our police department to make any progress in stimulating Harrisburg's revival."

Papenfuse is the only candidate who has pledged to support the Harrisburg Strong Plan that provides a path out of debt and avoids bankruptcy.

Papenfuse won the Democratic primary, defeating Miller, incumbent Mayor Linda Thompson and Lewis Butts.  Harrisburg police union endorses Papenfuse for mayor
