Heavily traveled bridge in Cumberland Co. closed indefinitely

MIDDLESEX -- A bridge in Middlesex Township, Cumberland County, has been closed indefinitely due to structural deficiencies.

Wolf Bridge, on Wolf Bridge Road, was closed by the county board of commissioners after an annual inspection revealed that the bridge's stringers -- key parts of the bridge that support its weight-carrying capacity -- showed significant deterioration, which made the bridge unsafe to traffic.

The closure goes into effect immediately and will remain in effect until county officials determine the type and cost of the necessary repairs. The county will work with Middlesex Township to barricade the bridge and post appropriate detour signage.

Expensive improvements to the bridge may be deferred, because the county initiated a replacement project for the bridge -- with an estimated price tag of $3.5 million -- in July 2012.

Funding for that replacement project would be provided by federal, state, and county sources. Final construction is expected to occur in 2016.

Wolf Bridge is a 192-foot truss bridge constructed in 1895. It has a 10-ton weight limit and carries an estimated 2,000 vehicles per day over the Conodoguinet Creek.Heavily traveled bridge in Cumberland Co. closed indefinitely
