When it comes to threats of a government shutdown, the bottom line for many becomes: "If it happens, what will it mean for me?"

The October 1st deadline of the government running out of money is looming and thousands of American workers know their income is tied to the government and their paycheck future is currently in limbo.

When it comes to government spending, the balance between what is considered waste and what is considered essential becomes debatable. A fine line is drawn when paychecks and healthcare are involved.

Thousands of non-essential government workers are facing a furlough.

While social security payments would come, payments could be delayed and new claims may not be processed, national parks and museums would be closed and housing and student loan applications would not be processed.

Air traffic controllers will still have to report to work, however, there may be fewer travelers. Passports are federally issued, and may not be processed if there is a government shutdown.

Some in Washington say the odds of a shutdown are 50/50. Democrats met last night and appear to be on the same page.

CBS News has learned Republicans are considering another attempt at delaying  the President's healthcare law when it gets the bill back from the Senate.

That decision will likely be made in today's meeting. The debate over funding for "Obamacare" could force a government shutdown if a decision isn't reached.

Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey says the threat of a government shutdown is already doing damage to the country, "A government shut down is bad enough, we all know that. but even getting close to it, is not good for the economy."

A final vote in the Senate is expected tomorrow morning, the bill then heads back to the house where anything could happen.
