QUARRYVILLE -- Today a local hero who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect his country was laid to rest.

Staff Sgt. Patrick Quinn was killed in the line of duty two weeks ago in Afghanistan.  Today family, friends, and community members gathered at Wesley Church in Quarryville to say a final goodbye.

"You can feel the love that his family and his fellow service members have for Patrick Quinn," Staff Sgt. Marcus Butler, public affairs chief with the U.S. Army Special Forces Command Airborne, said. Quinn was killed when his base in Paktika province was attacked by enemy fire. He was a member of the third Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group.

Fellow Special Forces Group member Staff Sgt. Marcus Butler says that Quinn paid the ultimate sacrifice for the people he loved.

You do it going into it knowing that you could possibly make that ultimate sacrifice, but you do it anyway because of the people that you love and the people that you want to protect, Butler said.

Following the funeral, a procession traveled from the church to Quarryville Cemetery, where his family and fellow service members paid tribute to the man they knew.

He had a no-quit attitude whenever he approached anything, be it running, pole-vaulting, or the army in general. There was nothing in his mind that he thought he couldnt do, Butler said.

Following his death, Quinn was awarded the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star Medal, which is awarded for acts of heroism.  People recognize greatness in other people and Sgt. Quinn was a very great and heroic person and it shows by the support of his community, Butler said.

As a 21-gun salute was issued, and with fellow service members looking on, the flag draped over Quinns casket was handed over to his wife. Quinn is survived by his wife and three children.

He loved his family. It was all about his family, his wife and his three boys. They were the center of his life, they were the reason why he did what he did, Butler said. Local hero killed in Afghanistan laid to rest with full military honors
