Man rescues neighbor from burning apartment building

Updated: Friday, September 6 2013, 05:31 PM CDT
Reported by Chris Papst:

Harrisburg -- A man is being called a hero after helping his neighbor escape from her burning house in Harrisburg.

It happened early Friday afternoon in the 1900 block of Berryhill Street.
Ronnie Ballard smelled smoke in his second floor apartment. After getting his family out, he went back inside to check on his neighbor who lives on the first floor and realized she was still there.
Despite the heavy smoke, Ballard got her out, too.

She was staggering out. I don't know where I got that strength from, Ballard exclaimed.  If you had seen her, you would see what Im talking about.  Then I got her to not that white chair, but that chair by the window.  I got her to sit down, but I didn't want her to lose consciousness so I said, 'stay with me. Stay with me.'  It was like she didn't want to go on anymore.  I'm not going to say I wasn't scared. I was man.  The next thing I know people ran out of nowhere and up onto the porch.  I guess, they finally got some courage.

Police say the woman was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

There's no word on her condition at this time.
