RED LION -- The step-brother of a York Township man who shot his girlfriend and then himself describes a chaotic scene that escalated into Snyder shooting his girlfriend, firing at his family, and then exchanging gunfire with police. The incident happened at Snyder’s South Franklin Street home.

John Snyder’s step-brother told CBS 21 News that he tried to break up a fight between the couple just after 11 p.m. Tuesday but things just escalated.

Jessica Mellinger and John Snyder -- both 24-years-old -- are seen  on Facebook at happier moment with a caption “Love you Babe.”

John's step-brother says he doesn’t know what caused the fight and he was not aware of other physical fights between the two; however, he says Snyder was drinking Tuesday night.

He reports John went into the basement and got a shot gun. From the basement, John began firing at the family. They ran out of the home, pulling Jessica with them. Snyder followed, he says, and  shot Mellinger as she sat in a car, trying to flee the situation.

The coroner  says she was shot in the chest. Sad reminders remain on the driveway this afternoon where she was hit, but police say Snyder pulled her body into the home, as the home was surrounded.  The rest of the family ran on foot next door.

The stand-off continued until around 4 am when the SWAT team made its move -- busting into the home and finding John Snyder had shot himself in the head and Jessica also dead.

The step-brother says “she was a sweet girl, she didn’t deserve this.”
