New Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse eager and ready to get to work

Updated: Monday, January 6 2014, 07:29 PM CST
Reported by Jesse Knutson:

HARRISBURG -- Harrisburg has a new Mayor.

Eric Papenfuse officially took the oath of office Monday morning, and he has already started to put some changes in place.

“Today is a day for rolling up our sleeves and getting to work,” Papenfuse said in his inaugural address as mayor.

After touring parts of City Hall and seeing how run-down it is, Papenfuse chose to not have a fancy inauguration and instead is asking for donations to fix the government center.

“We’re establishing a non-profit fund to help fix up the building,” Papenfuse advised.

To show the public how run down the building is, the media was invited to take a tour with the new mayor, director of public works, as well as members of the police department.

“As you can see, we have ceiling tiles missing, we have water spots on the ceiling tiles, if you look at the carpet, this carpet is over 35 years old,” commented Harrisburg Police Chief Thomas Carter.

Chief Carter says that this not only slows down work when it rains because water pours through the ceiling, but it hurts morale.

“We just put up with it because, you know, we’re police officers and some things you just have to put up with,” Carter stated.

“It is not too much to ask to have working conditions where the roof doesn’t leak, where you’re not going to trip over the carpets, where the light switches work, where the ceiling tiles are actually in the ceiling,” explained Mayor Papenfuse. “These are basic conditions which I think are really potentially at the root of our morale problems in the police ranks.”

Beyond fixing up City Hall, Papenfuse is ready to lead Harrisburg to a brighter future.

“Big changes are in store,” exclaimed Papenfuse. “I look forward to working with everyone in the community to make Harrisburg a great, vibrant and wonderful place to live, work, and play.”

While sitting in his mayor’s chair for the first time ever, the new mayor is ready to get to work.

Mayor Papenfuse says while he knows the challenges are great, he’s ready to serve the city of Harrisburg.

This week, Papenfuse will have a series of press conferences to announce new members of his team, starting with a public safety press conference Tuesday morning.
