New Hope Charter School ordered to close

More than 800 charter students in York County will have to start looking for a new school.  On Tuesday, the New Hope Academy lost an effort to stay open.

A final court appeal is possible but a founder of the Academy says its probably unlikely or too lengthy.  So that means students will have to find a  new school by January 15th.

The school for 5th to 12th graders, was created in 2007.

Last year - the York City School Board voted not to renew its charter.  But on Tuesday, the school took their case to the Charter Appeals Board.

However, the board decided to go along with the school board's decision to not renew their license.  Both the school board and the charter board noted concerns about academic performance, fiscal issues, and admission policies.

Calvin Weary the Director of the Performance Art Program says the students are worried about their future. "We have a lot of students that this is their home.  It's their home and now they don't know where they will go and they're afraid."

Not only will the students be impacted, but 100 teachers and staff members will lose their jobs.

The state says this year the school received a school profile grade of 44.4.  The state considers 70 or above a school meeting performance level.  New Hope Charter School ordered to close
