HARRISBURG – In Harrisburg today, a new police chief was sworn in.

Newly appointed chief Tom Carter has been on the force for 26 years.

Today's ceremony also announced a new public safety team for the capitol city.

Mayor Eric Papenfuse said the team will reorganize workflow to help transform Harrisburg into a more beautiful and safe city.

Carter says residents will notice a change.

“I do believe that in Harrisburg City we have the greatest police officers of everybody. We have come a long way, we have struggled, we have fought a hard fight, we have run a good race, and with our new leadership with Mr. Papenfuse at the helm I'm sure the citizens will see a great change here,” Carter said.

Police chief Robert Martin from Susquehanna Township is helping with the transition, spending a few days a week coaching Harrisburg police to help make the force stronger.

Dauphin County commissioners are also contributing $37,000 to the new public safety project to help offset Harrisburg police equipment costs.Papenfuse appoints new police chief, public safety team
