LANCASTER COUNTY -- A Lancaster County community is remembering a well-known woman who was killed Monday night after she was struck by a car.

Northern Lancaster Regional Police identified the victim as Suzanne Cassel, 63, of Lititz.

Officers said Cassel was retrieving mail from across the street of her home when a car driven by Elizabeth Randler, 22, struck her along the 700 block of Fruitville Pike.

John Wagner, a relative of Cassel, said she was a loving and loyal woman.

Wagner saw the road was blocked off Monday night and knew it was a tragic accident. On Tuesday morning, he heard the victim was his cousin's wife.

"They had a lot of friends and a lot of acquaintances through the years," recalled Wagner. "They blessed a lot of people."

Cassel's family owns a sign shop in Lititz, next door to the home she shared with her husband.

Traffic along the stretch on Fruitville Pike has picked up in this area in recent years. What now has become a popular route to enter Lancaster also brings those who travel too fast, said Wagner.

"The traffic tends to probably a little faster than they used to but by and large it's been a fairly safe road," said Wagner.

While it is a difficult loss for the family, so close to Christmas, Wagner reflected on just how short and unexpected life can bring.

"It's a reminder of the brevity of life and we never know," Wagner said.
