PennDOT making weekend highway repairs

In the drive from Harrisburg along I-81 and I-83, there were five electronic signs alerting drivers to the closure here at Route 283 near the junction with the turnpike.

With that said, this will still be a mess over the weekend, from March 7-9th.  And this is just one of two major roads that will be closed or detoured because of the need to fix some problem spots.

First, in Dauphin County, Route 283 eastbound will be completely shut down as crews try to fix a major sinkhole in the fast lane. The dip in the road has developed and worsened over the past couple of weeks.

In response, construction crews plan on removing the concrete pavement slabs over the sinkhole and determine how to fix the problem and make the needed repairs.

But starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Route 283 in the eastbound direction towards Lancaster will be a no go. To avoid the mess, detours will direct you on to Eisenshower Boulevard.

Drivers will then make a left onto Fulling Mill Road, a right onto Union Street and get back on Route 283 around the blockage.

Route 283 is not the only traffic hotspot this weekend.

Crews will also be shutting down a portion of northbound Interstate 83 just north of the Maryland line.    During this repair, drivers will lose one of two lanes. Workers have discovered a dip in the road that has developed because of deteriorating draining pipe.

Construction crews are going to stabilize the concrete slabs over the drainage pipe by using concrete grouting to fill the void.

Expect both of these closures to take the entire weekend with the goal to finish the repairs by the morning rush on Monday, March 10th.

When you talk about major arteries, these are two of the biggest.

Route 283 east in this area carries about 26,000 cars a day while the part of I-83 just north of the Maryland line carries about 20,000 cars a day.

PennDOT hopes to have construction complete this weekend but they are not sure how bad either of the problems are and how long the repairs may take.PennDOT making weekend highway repairs
