President Obama speaks just hours left before the government shuts down

Updated: Monday, September 30 2013, 05:51 PM CDT
The government will partially shut down in just hours if Democrats and Republicans don't come up with a compromise in Washington.

Just over an hour ago, President Barack Obama publicly put pressure on Republicans to avoid a shutdown.

He says it would hurt the economy and hundreds of thousands of government workers.

“These Americans are our neighbors.  Their kids go to our schools,” stated President Obama.  “They worship where we do.  They serve our country with pride.  They are the customers of every business in this country. And they will be hurt greatly.  And as a consequences we all would be hurt greatly if Congress chooses to shut down the people's government.”

Both parties are at a standstill, debating whether funding for the president's healthcare law should be included in a temporary funding bill.
The Senate voted to take Obamacare out of the equation and pass legislation that just focuses on keeping the government up and running.

But conservative Republicans are adamant that the bill won't pass until government funding is cut from Obamacare.

"It's time for the Senate to listen to the American people, just like the House listened to the American people," commented Speaker of the House John Boehner.

If there is a partial government shutdown, passports will be delayed, federally back mortgages and gun permits won't be processed and about 800,000 federal workers would be forced off the job without pay.
