LANCASTER -- The Lancaster County SPCA continues to investigate an animal cruelty incident from earlier today.

Two 8- to 12- week old Chihuahua/Yorkie mix puppies were found around 9:30 a.m. stuffed in a backpack.

A man in Lancaster walked out of his home and saw there was a backpack by his mailbox. He looked inside and saw the two puppies, which he then took to the SPCA.

The investigation is ongoing and the man who found the puppies wants to remain anonymous.

The puppies are in good health. An animal control officer said that whoever left the puppies faces animal cruelty and abandonment charges, both of which carry hefty fines.

Anyone who knows who may have owned the backpack is asked to call Animal Enforcement Officer Karen Dinkel at 717-735-3453. Puppies found outside in backpack taken to Lancaster SPCA
