Train derailment causes headaches in Cumberland Co.

DILLSBURG -- Crews are hard at working trying to clear the remnants of a train crash this afternoon off both the train tracks and the road way so the roads in the area can be reopened.

Around 1:40 this afternoon, a train collided with a tractor trailer, causing 10 to 12 rail cars to derail from the tracks.  Police say the tractor trailer was carrying a large cement beam when it tried to cross the railroad tracks at Brandtsville Crossing near York Road in Creek Road in Monroe Township, Cumberland County.

The tractor trailer was not able to get across the tracks before a Norfolk Southern freight train struck it.  The accident shut down many area roads and forced cars to take detours, creating a traffic nightmare that crews hope to have solved by tomorrow morning's commute.

“We anticipate in the area being significantly impacted for quite some time," Lt. Adam Kosheba with the Pennsylvania State Police Troop H barracks said.

Throughout the night, crews have been working to remove debris and place train cars back on the tracks so they can clear the area. Authorities say no hazardous materials have leaked from the truck, but a HAZMAT team is on standby to ensure the public’s safety.

State police say it could take Norfolk Southern crews until mid-day tomorrow to clear the mess.  “They’re going to have to remove the railcars that have been dislodged and the debris on either side of the railroad tracks will have to be cleaned up,” Kosheba said.

Despite the destruction, no one was seriously injured in this accident. The driver of the train had minor injuries, but was treated on-scene.

Police are hoping the roads in the area will be open in the next few hours, but just incase, they have alternate routes in place for school buses should they need it. Train derailment causes headaches in Cumberland Co.
