UPDATE: Woman struck and killed in Lancaster identified

Updated: Thursday, March 6 2014, 01:13 PM CST
Reported by Christina Butler:

LANCASTER -- Police have identified the woman killed in a pedestrian crash in Lancaster Wednesday afternoon.

Catherine Dowling, 52, was killed when she was struck at the intersection of Water and Lemon Streets.  She was transported to the hospital, but died as she was being treated due to her injuries.

A preliminary investigation shows that a 1998 Cadillac Seville being driven by an 81-year-old man was traveling southbound on Water Street, when it was struck by a 1996 Ford E250 van driven by a 50-year-old man.

Due to the collision, the driver of the Cadillac lost control of his vehicle, and struck the pedestrian.

“I saw her lying in the road, police were here, there were no ambulances yet,” stated Colleen Jacobson who lives right next to the scene.

She says drivers often speed through the area.

“You see people and they're speeding and it's a shame that somebody innocent had to suffer for it,” Jacobson commented.

“Whether were talking about someone who stopped at the stop sign and pulled out before safe, we don't know yet,” explained Lancaster City Police Sgt. Bill Hickey. “That's what we're looking at and everything leading up to it as part of our investigation.”

Both drivers are cooperating with police, as well as four or five witnesses.

Surveillance from two cameras is also being reviewed

“It's tragic someone was just crossing the street and that's their last movement, it's a shame,” admitted Jacobson.

Police are still investigating the crash and ask anyone with information to call Sgt. Phil Berkheiser at 717-735-3301.  UPDATE: Woman struck and killed in Lancaster identified
