West Manheim couple charged with child endangerment

Updated: Tuesday, September 24 2013, 04:45 PM CDT
The West Manheim Township Police Department has charged a couple with endangering the welfare of children after a child was found wandering in the street on Sunday.

Police were called to Saint Georgia Drive and Malek Drive for a report of a one-year-old boy and a small dog standing on the sidewalk,  unsupervised.

Police say several witnesses went to return the child to a home and observed Robert L. Goldsmith Jr., 39, drinking beer and falling into the garage wall as he staggered back into the home. The witnesses knocked on the door and said a 6-year-old girl answered the door. Police say the girl was eventually able to get Kimberly Goldsmith, 34, to the door.  Kimberly stated she would have noticed the one year old child missing "in a minute or two."

An investigating officer arrived at the scene and found that Kimberly Goldsmith, 34, had taken the 1-year-old shopping in Maryland and had left the 6-year-old in Robert's care.

Police say Robert was found to have defecated on himself and the floor. Police say he was highly intoxicated and had difficulty standing; walking, and talking.

Robert allegedly denied alcohol or drug use, but the 6-year-old child said he drank 5 beers.  Robert incorrectly insisted the one year old child was upstairs while asking where Kimberly was, a press release said.

Kimberly was contacted by phone and she insisted her husband was fine to watch the 6-year -old when she left to go shopping.

York County Children, Youth and Families responded and took emergency custody of both children.  Warrants were obtained for Robert and Kimberly and they were arrested at their home on Monday September 23 and transported to Central Booking.

Roberts bail was set at $20,000 and Kimberlys $10,000.

Anyone who saw a one year old child walking in the St. Georgia, Louvain, Malek Drive areas is asked to call Investigating Officer Craig Snyder at 717-632-7059 ext. 105. West Manheim couple charged with child endangerment
