A woman is facing charges after allegedly spending the night in Walmart and then stealing over $500 worth of items.

Police say Heather Defretias concealed $575.93 worth of clothing and other merchandise in two large handbags, and attempted to exit the store without paying. Police say Defreitas had three children, ages 3, 6, and 7, with her at the time of the alleged theft.

Defreitas had allegedly been in the store with the children from 10:30 p.m. until the time of her arrest at 6:14 a.m. Police say the children had spent most of the eight hours sleeping in shopping carts.

Defreitas was charged with felony retail theft, due to prior retail theft dispositions, and misdemeanor corruption of minors.

She was arraigned and released on $500.000 bail.

The children were turned over to the custody of their father.Woman arrested for retail theft
