Source: No City money used for City Islanders' new stadium

Updated: Tuesday, March 18 2014, 09:27 PM CDT

HARRISBURG -- The Harrisburg City Islanders' dream of a new stadium now appears to be a reality.

Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse announced today plans are in place for a new multi-use facility at the city-owned Skyline Sports Complex on City Island.

The plans include upgrading the current facility seating to more than 4,500 seats; creating a new entrance plaza, new concession area, locker rooms, and restroom facilities; installing a new scoreboard and a variety of other amenities designed to allow this facility to be a multi-use soccer field, youth development center and concert arena, according to a news release.

A source with knowledge of the project tells CBS 21 News Sports Director Jason Bristol the plans do not call for any money from the City of Harrisburg.

“This new facility is being planned for 2016,” said Mayor Papenfuse in a statement, “and will provide a wonderful new recreational facility for the entire region.”

An official announcement of the stadium project will be made Thursday.

Skyline is home of the Harrisburg City Islanders, a member of the United Soccer League's Professional Division.  The Islanders are affiliated with the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer.
